Cultural Travelling in Leeds Communities
By Janis Rafa
The work ‘Cultural Travelling in Leeds Communities’ was exhibited as part of the group show ‘Passing Through’ at the Leeds Art Gallery, along with works by Georgina Starr, Annelies Strba and Rosalind Nashashibi, acquired for the Gallery’s collection through the Contemporary Art Society’s Special Collections Scheme.
The project involved a six-month research on the various cultural communities all located in Leeds: Chinese, Asian Muslim, Sikh, Polish, West Indian and Greek. The exhibition was composed by six videos and a one-off site-specific event that took place inside the gallery (image above). The event was a meal among the members of the communities, which took place inside the installation prior to the opening of the exhibition. The table/benches structure after its use was left in the space as a reminiscent of this act, along the videos on display. The videos were displayed on plasma screens, wall mounted (image below). They present observational footage of the interiors of the six cultural community centres.
