This was my first ever charity shop painting – I did it over a print of Renoir’s ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’ that I bought at the Christian Charity Shop on Blackstock Road. At the time I was just starting my lost rivers research that eventually became The Groundwater Diaries and was fascinated by the New River.

The patch of beautiful green scummy water in the foreground has now been filled in. The tower blocks are still there, though hopefully they are more architecturally sound than they appear in the picture.

I do a lot of scratching away at paintings like this, so ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’ has started to reappear…
