Démocratie, Democracia, Democracy
At the centre of the image is the statue of Marianne at the Place de la République in Paris which was a focal point for the Charlie Hebdo demonstrations. Liberty is represented by an ordinary woman, standing up for her rights, an icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of dictatorship. In the background the 12 stars of the European flag represent the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony.
Around the statue are slogans and images of demonstrators from various 2014-15 events:
From Hong Kong… 勿忘初衷, matmong cocung, or “don’t forget our original intention” (to demand true democratic elections) and a youth holding an umbrella
From Paris… ‘je suis CHARLIE’, a demonstrator holding a large pencil and ‘A la terreur nous répondons par plus de Démocratie’ held by a demonstrator
From Spain… ‘INDIGNADOS’, ‘BASTA ‘, ‘LO LLAMAN DEMOCRACIA’ and demonstrators banging pots
From the USA… ‘You Are the 99%
From India… ‘ENOUGH is ENOUGH’
From Tunisia… Hands holding flowers
From Mexico City… two hands and a woman shouting
