“Swings and Lampposts”

…Some of the street games were quite dangerous. We sometimes used to use the old street lampposts and fasten some old rope to the bars that stood out at the top of the post. Someone would shin up and wrap the rope around. At first it was fun but accidents happened. Sometimes the cast iron bar would snap and if you were in mid swing it was a painful landing. Other times you’d swing out of control and smack back into the post itself. The council eventually gave up replacing them and left them off altogether…
