Lough Swilley, Donegal

This painting is based on sketches I made overlooking Lough Swilley in north Donegal, Ireland. It’s a very long and deep sea lough where galleons and battleships have all passed through over the centuries. At the bottom right is an old Napoleonic era fort that used to guard the entrance. In the painting the tide is racing in causing turbulent eddies to form on the coast below the fort. A swell marches in from the Atlantic Ocean to the north and a small fishing boat follows the tide in. For anyone who knows and loves Donegal I would be pleased to take a commission based on this painting preferably twice this size as the subject needs a bigger scale.
