Mint Flower Fine Silver Rectangle Earrings
I was picking some mint from the garden when I noticed the lovely flowers it was producing and I thought they would be good for making a mould for some interesting naturalist style two dimensional earrings and here is the result. When I made the first earring it ended up with a curve at the bottom and I thought this looked nice so I made the other match the first! I then patinated the earrings very lightly so it just went into the nooks and crannies and the patination is blue/black and green. They have a simple sterling silver hook ear fitting that is good and long at the back. The earrings from the top of the hook are 4.6cm long and 1.1cm wide and the drop length from the bottom of the hook is 3.3cm, in inches that is just over 1 3/4 inches from the top of the hook, just over 3/8 of an inch wide and the drop length is 1 1/4 inches. They are made from fine silver metal clay, which is tiny particles of fine silver (99.9% purity, sterling is 92.5%) mixed with a clay binder and then textured, shaped, sculpted etc., once dried it is then fired where the clay binder burns away and the metal particles fuse together leaving a solid silver piece, first created by the Japanese and now produced in all sorts of metals! I love metal clay but please note it does not come out like a smooth milled sheet of metal at the end of all the processes, I feel this is part of it’s charm and it is solid metal of whichever type it is made from.
