Tortoiseshell Butterfly Pendant
My version of the lovely Tortoiseshell Butterfly, having made one in bronze previously I thought I would make this one is silver! The butterfly is slightly curved and the raised parts are polished to give the butterfly depth and texture. I have hung the butterfly on a lovely sterling silver popcorn style chain, I thought it worked well with it. The chain has a good sized sterling carabiner clasp. Around the world people se the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope and life! An interesting and eye catching piece!
The butterfly is 4.3cm (just under 1 3/4 inches) wide and 2.2cm tall (just over 3/4 of an inch).
The butterfly is made from fine silver metal clay. If you haven’t come across metal clay before it was first created by the Japanese back in 1990 in gold and then in turn silver, it is microscopic particles of silver mixed into a binder, it can be sculpted, textured, rolled etc. it is then fired whereupon the binder burns away and the particles fuse together or sinter into a solid metal piece. here are all sorts of metal clays available today, the one I have used is fine silver which means it is 99.9% silver, sterling is 92.5% silver but sterling is a little tougher so it works well for catches and chains etc.
