Samuel Palmer's Walled Garden
By tim smith
Gardens are so precious to us and offer us the joy of quiet reflective space away from the pressures of life. These little enclosed landscape spaces fascinate me in the way they change and provide such joys in colour. Sometimes it is really useful for me to add an escape route in a painting, a gap in the forms which otherwise fill the space, and the garden as a subject is great for allowing this. The word paradise comes from a Persian word meaning walled garden.

About the artist
My work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what I want to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, I hope held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
