Snake pendant in sterling silver wire on a Viking knit chain - Akurra
By Abby Hook
Akurra, the Snake - Lake Frome in northern South Australia is part of the local Dreaming story told by the Adnyamathanha people explaining how the region’s geology and species originated.
According to this Dreaming story, Lake Frome was emptied of its water by the Rainbow Serpent Akurra when he ventured down Arkaroola Creek (which flows onto Lake Frome) to drink.
The snake drank all the water in the lake and returned to the ranges where it still sleeps.
The pendant has a flowing snake, made from thick sterling silver wire which I have hand forged and then hammered. The bail is seperate, allowing the snake to move freely.
The handmade chain is created using double Viking knit, which I have finished with handmade end caps and a handmade clasp.
I have oxidised this piece, giving it an antiqued effect, to really highlight the detail.
The chain is 15 1/2” long. The pendant is 1” wide and 1 1/2” tall including the bail.
This necklace comes in a jewellery box.
