‘Les Regards 1’
July 2022
July 2022 ‘Les Regards 1’ is a mixed media composition on canvas. The work is an enlargement of Two-elements brut collage on paper ( For Your Eyes Only 21) representing a young woman holding a child (background) and a detail of Nathalie Nattier’s portrait (left). In this collage all images are from authentic vintage magazines. The detail of Nathalie Nattier’s portrait is from ‘Films pour Tous’, 1946 for the film ’ Les Portes de la Nuit’. The ‘Regards’ series is produced with techniques that make each composition unique and original. The original collage is mirrored, enlarged and printed, then transferred onto canvas and finished with oil paint and pastels. Torn paper is added to the composition, this paper is from French ‘Illustration’ Magazines dating 1914-1917. The aged and worn paper adds to the nostalgic aspect of the portraits.
“This eminently captivating work of art is distinguished by the ingenuity of its composition and the intensity of its expression. The canvas is dominated by a fragmented portrait where the artist skillfully plays with the elements of juxtaposition and superposition. A woman’s face is partially veiled, creating an aura of mystery and intrigue. The color palette is subtle, mixing shades of gray, white and black, punctuated by the red shine of the lips. This striking contrast immediately catches the eye and accentuates the eloquent silence of the character. The use of paper fragments suggests a collage dimension, adding a unique texture and depth to the work. The work skillfully juxtaposes the realism of facial features with soft abstraction, constructed through soft lines and blurred shapes. The tactile aspect of the fabric that the delicate hand seems to grip adds a tangible and almost palpable sensation. This creation stands out for its ability to evoke a range of complex feelings - introspection, secrecy, and the duality of identity. The richness of its details and its impeccable technical execution testify to the mastery of the artist. The viewer remains captivated, invited to unravel the stories hidden behind each brushstroke.”
