Homage to an unknown African Woodcarver
I made the work shown here from laminated and carved Perspex. It is not a cast made with resin, it is a shaped object which has been laboriously hand polished to a mirror finish.
After making it I was reminded of an Africa woodcarving I have.
But it bears little resemblance. It’s not the same shape, it’s less than half the size, it’s not made of wood and it has no facial features. But oddly, it has a resonance with this other form.
I would love to meet the person who made the wood carving I bought but it is impossible. I am simply left to wonder about the intent of it’s maker. And I cannot know what they might think about this piece. I do not know them, they do not know me, but I pay tribute to another maker, on another continent, who shared a love of making.
