Shoal
Rough-hewn carving into sandstone (York stone). Made from saved stone.
Rough hewn relief carving of fish shoal.
The sculpture attempts to capture the sudden, quick-darting change of direction that fish shoals are known for. The natural sparkle of sandstone in sunlight assists this affect.
The sculpture measures 64 x 27 x 5 cms and weighs 12kgs
The work should be wall mounted (with suitable heavy duty brackets), where sunlight or angled artificial light rakes across it. This produces shadows that bring the sculpture to life.
Inspiration
This is the first in a series of “writhing scenes”. I am intrigued and yet horrified by huge numbers of people and/or creatures that are pressed into the same space. With the ‘Shoal’ the fish benefit from the safety of numbers, while other organisms suffer from stress and claustrophobia when overcrowded.
