I’M MOVING

The McAlistair Hood stone sculpture studio is moving, across the Thames, from its home of ten years on the Englefield Estate in Berkshire, to become part of the progressive changes at the Hardwick Estate in Oxfordshire.

The role of the new studio will be to assist the artist’s attempt to discover and recover long-lost human capabilities, so that he may then describe or represent them sculpturally.

Seven years’ ago the artist, Andrew Hood, dispensed with his house and has since slept outdoors, all year round, in secret countryside locations across West Berkshire ; he runs barefoot, swims only in outdoor water and hunts and forages for food and fibres. In the new studio he will carve into stone, images that represent the very ancient psychological states and redundant sensory abilities he has retrieved.

“The hardships and pleasures of living so intimately with the natural world locally and on a daily basis, these past few years, have purged the horrors of commercial false imperatives, and the disempowering effects of motor assistance, harmful diet and technologies. This has made it possible to engage more deeply with the extraordinary experience of being alive and human.
“The new studio will be my observatory and workshop. It is large enough and better placed geographically to facilitate this artistic endeavour. Added to which, the whole aesthetic of the Hardwick Estate and my fellow tenants there, will encourage me to dig deeper and learn more.”

Andrew invites anyone else who is interested in this atavistic quest for creative purity and personal efficacy to join in ; individually or as a group. He has designed two courses to accommodate you. Community organisations such as RISC, British Islamic Gardens, Food4Families, Nature Nurture, and Reading Green Well-being Network have already tapped into the McAlistair Hood sculpture-based well-being offerings : from stone carving lessons, to sustainability presentations, and guided walks.
