Penannular Brooch - Calla Lily - Twisted Sterling Silver - Celtic Fibula pin
By Abby Hook
This feminine design has two Lilies at one end as the focal detail, which are symbolic of purity, sympathy, beauty, perfect for this delicate, botanical brooch. Sweeping flowing lines of silver wire lead from the flowers, creating the body of the brooch. This is accentuated at the other end of the brooch, which is finished with a flourish of swirls.
I was inspired to make this piece by the beautiful Celtic and Viking brooches. The simple mechanics of this style of fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf, kilt or hat pin. The last image in the sequence shows you how to wear it.
I have made the brooch with thick sterling silver wires to form the shape, which I have braided together, hand forged and then hammered to create an attractive pattern, this also makes the structure very strong. I have formed 2 overlapping flowers at one end of the brooch, with spiraled wire on the other
The pin is made from 1.2mm wire, which I have filed and sanded into a point. This is finished with a Calla Lily
The brooch measures 2” across (from side to side) and 2 1/4” tall (from the bottom to the top of the spirals) and the pin is 3” long.
