Ronald Pope Sculptor

Ronald Pope was a Sculptor, Painter and Teacher, born in Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. He was educated at Derby College of Technology, gaining an engineering degree in 1941 that led him to the tool design office at Rolls-Royce. Studied at Derby College of Art, 1943–45, then Slade School of Fine Art, 1945–48. I was inspired by Pope’s sculptures which are outstanding, he had a very versatile imagination working with various materials such as wood, metal, clay, stone. The most beautiful thing about his artwork is that it gives the viewers a feeling of a bond between two people in the sculpture and inspires you to reflect on the nature of family relationship. Pope believed in oneness of the family, and humanity. He was a man with a clear mind and determined nature. He saw himself as a philosopher who believed deeply that true art is a loving art and that everything he created was sufficient to itself, which I too believe. He wanted his art to speak for itself, which it does in many ways. The more his work became recognised, the more he wanted to retreated from the public gaze and he became increasingly frustrated with the commercialism he would need to adopt to deal with it.
