Women with Wings
This Diptych is made with Palmino Blackwing Pencil on paper, with acrylic background paint, framed and ready to hang. In this diptych both characters are aviation pilots, depicting historically significant women who were at the forefront of their field, one in America and the other from the United Kingdom. This method of portraying artwork has been around for centuries and continues to be relevant to this day.
The two modern portraits are alike in idea, composition and colour. They depict different angles, however there is a sense of coherence without having both people in the same place. Both characters met in 1933 New York, USA, Amelia was at the time America’s First Lady of the Air. Whilst Amy was flying a G-ACCV named Seafarer nonstop from South Wales, United Kingdom, to Brooklyn, New York. Amelia was born in (1897-1937) and Amy in (1903-1941). Amy was born 6 years after Amelia and died 4 years after her. Both characters have influenced women’s roles in society and aviators around the world for over 90 years.
Both women died inexplicably, on the 2nd July 1937 Amelia disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. On the 5th January 1941 Amy was flying for the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) and her plane crashed into the Thames Estuary. It was thought that Amy had run out of fuel, she was never to be seen again, her body was not recovered from the river. To this day their deaths remain a mystery.
