The Jazz Queen - Adelaide Hall
Jazz music is one of my passions in life. When I heard about Adelaide I was inspired to hear that Hall was the first female vocalist to sing and record with Duke Ellington. The drawing is made with Silverpoint it is ready to hang, all hardware is include. Silverpoint is versatile, it allows me to draw incredibly fine lines and broader lines. Using a linear approach in design, allows formal aspects of drawing and hatching for the tonal aspects.
Adelaide Hall who was the daughter of a music teacher, William and Elizabeth Hall she was the elder of the two daughters. Adelaide born 20th October 1901 in Brooklyn, New York died 7th November 1993, at the age of 92 in London’s Charing Cross Hospital of natural causes. Her wish was to be buried in New York at the Cathedral of Incarnation. She was one of the world’s first jazz singers. An American-born UK-based Jazz Singer and entertainer, a singer who gained popularity without using words, pioneering ‘scat singing’, which is a style of jazz where the singer uses their voice like a saxophone or trumpet to sing improvised musical notes and melodies. In 1938 she moved to the United Kingdom where she became very popular with British audiences, she stayed and made her home in London, until her death in 1993. Hall opened the Calypso Club in Regent Street, London where it is said that Princess Elizabeth and many other members of the Royal Family frequently visited. Hall entertained the Duchess of Kent, The Churchills, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor of the day. Adelaide entertained the troops by singing to the soldiers keeping their morale high during the blitz across Europe in WWII some who were seriously wounded – a true pioneer of her time.
