Sléadóireacht, Acaill.
Peat Cutting, Achill Island. Oil on canvas 30 x 20 inches. Framed size 36 x 26 inches.
Frame colour “Charleston Grey”, Slip colour “Dimity” both by Farrow and Ball.
A contemporary view of peat banks on Achill with the ubiquitous white animal feed bags used for the turfs. The distant hills are part of the Nephin range.
Artist’s notes: I read an article challenging artists to paint a landscape showing peat cutting as it is today, rather than copying romantic imagery from the last century. White plastic bags may be less photogenic than traditional peat stacks but they make a statement!
