Bóthar an Phortaigh, Conamara.

By William Swann

Bóthar an Phortaigh, Conamara.

The Bog Road, Connemara.  Oil on canvas 30 x 20 inches.  Framed size 36 x 26 inches.

Framed in an “Antique Gold” frame by Arqadia with a painted slip.  Slip colour “Dimity” by Farrow and Ball.

A view from the old bog road, looking across the Roundstone Bog towards the Connemara Bens.  Seen in early morning light, this vast blanket bog is one of many on Ireland’s west coast of international conservation importance.

Artist’s notes: this is perhaps one of my most uncompromisingly personal paintings.  Like the open sea, there is something awesome about these vast areas of mountain and bog.  Brooding, desolate and empty, Connemara is to my eyes a place of great beauty, albeit not in a conventional sense.
